Wind Energy Harvesting with a Kite

Abstract:

The scientific question addressed in this study is the maximisation of the average power produce by a device composed of a kite that follows an eight-shaped trajectory and a free-to-rotate horizontal arm; the kite is tethered to the arm by its lines and in turns the arm drives an electrical generator. We devise a simple mass-point mechanical model of this device in the form of a parametric dimension 4 ordinary differential equation (angular position of the arm, position of the kite along the eight, and both their derivatives). We optimise the parameters of this model in order to maximise the average power. On the path to optimisation, we discover the existence of two limit cycles and a few equilibria.
